You can learn more about Jack Malstrom in the article, "Indigenous and Two-Spirit Identity through the Airwaves."
Everyone working in education, regardless of age, identity, or politics, must remember that it's not only LGBTQA+/SGL people who are impacted by queer- and trans-antagonism. Others who are negatively impacted include:
- Gender non-conforming but straight- and cis-identifying people:
- Cis girls who aren't "feminine enough" and
- Cis boys who aren't "masculine enough."
- Girls (cis and trans) who are "too fat."
- Boys (cis and trans) who are "too weak" or "throw like a girl."
- Girls (cis and trans) who experience sexual harassment.
Ideally, it shouldn't take seeing that straight and cis students are impacted to make you want to get involved; you should want to improve your school climate specifically for your queer and trans students. However, if a broader approach is your motivation (or if it's the motivation of your school more broadly), i'll take it.
