You're so excited! And possibly terrified. *Gulp*
Congratulations! This is an important goal to have achieved. Buckle up for a ride that will likely be both unpredictable and wonderful, with some challenges thrown into the mix.
Yes, you sought out having queer or trans mentee. But be open to talking about things that are not just LGBTQA+/SGL topics. For instance, for those of us who are queer and/or trans, we aren't only those identities. So with your mentee.
In addition to what's below, you'll also want to check out R2T2's list of potential mentor/mentee activities.
"Supportive adults just keep things normal. They let me know that my identity isn't seen as weird to them, I'm just a person who's different than they are."
You'll find that this page contains an incredibly detailed start on possible activities.
Note that they all won't be appropriate to every age and developmental stage.
Nor will every mentee be interested in every possible activity. So find out what your mentee likes. What are their favorite local activities, places, and people?
If you're mentoring with an established program, see if they have donated gift cards from local businesses. And what activity ideas do they give their mentors? They undoubtedly have a list worked up and will hopefully have given it to you by this point.
Find a regular thing that you and your mentee usually do; you don't have to have something fun and flashy each time you meet.
- Does your mentee want to document your activities? If you're comfortable with that, let them!
- If you want to document your activities, ask them first.
- Then if you're participating in a formal mentoring program, check with the organization on their social media rules.
- Can you post pictures of your mentee online?
- Can your mentee post pictures of you online?
- As a default, do not post pictures of your mentee, especially without their consent.
