Support your queer or trans child in school: Why advocacy is crucial

Look through the R2T2 section for educators and the page on bullying. That will help give you an idea of the steps your child's school should be taking to protect and affirm them.

To find out what your school's or school district's policy might be, check your child's student handbook, the school's or district's website, or any materials you may have received as a prospective or new parent.

Ideally, you'll find information on how to file a complaint in the same place.

If you cannot find this information anywhere, contact the school or district directly and ask that they send you their policy.

You can also check out How to File a Complaint Against a School. It's not queer- or trans-specific but is very concrete on which actions to take when.

Note that, if the school offers any student clubs, they cannot deny queer and trans students the ability to hold meetings in the school building. Some shamelessly queer- and trans-antagonistic schools have gone as far as banning all student clubs to get around this "problem."
